Silversmithing on Long Island

Oysterponds Historic Society10:00- 11:00
Saturday, September 29th, 2018

Join us at Poquatuck Hall for an exploration of metal working in early America, including a discussion of several Long Island smiths. Silversmith Steve Smithers will discuss the history of silversmithing and the important role the noble metals played in American life from the 17th century to the present day. There will be several examples of early American silver on hand to illustrate the manner in which they were made. Steve will demonstrate and discuss the tools and techniques of the nearly lost art of hand hammered metalwork, and display some of the pieces he made in his workshop in the Berkshires of Massachusetts.

Historic Deerfield

Historic Deerfield Silver & Metalware Collection, Deerfield, MA
Demonstration of the Making of an Early American Flatware Set
Saturday, October 20th, 2018

10:00-4:00 PM

Since 1975, Silvermith Stephen Smithers has been researching and refining the classic art of silversmithing as practiced by master silvermiths throughout history. Originally a machinist and plater, Steve eventually had the opportunity to work on pieces made prior to the industrial revolution. Through the process of performing restorations on early metal objects, Steve has gained an intuitive sense of the original working methods used, which has influenced the design, construction, and craftsmanship of his own pieces. He acquired an understanding of the craft as it was practiced by hand, and today maintains that pride of workmanship as well as the care taken in the making of quality hand-wrought metal pieces.
